January - May 2024 Food Review
2:56 PMI am not so much of a fan of eating out, but I do enjoy checking out new restaurants and cafes. For me, it’s all about finding a place that offers something better than what I can cook at home. If a cafe or restaurant can surprise me with a delicious dish or a great atmosphere, it’s worth the visit. I’m always on the lookout for those special spots that make dining out feel like a real treat.
In January 2024, I found my new (and now favorite) Thai restaurant, Soi55, just a short distance from my house. From the moment I stepped in, it was clear that this place was something special. The vibrant, authentic flavors of their dishes—like the perfectly done steam fish & butter prawn, aromatic green curry (Seff's favourite!)—quickly won me over. The cozy, welcoming atmosphere made it feel like a hidden gem in the neighborhood.
Soi55 Rating : 5/5
In February, which is our (couple) anniversary month, we tried out Spice Alley @ IOI City Mall before our proper date at JIBRIL (cuz I heard good review and people going for their anniversary). While JIBRIL had all the right ingredients, the flavors were a bit underwhelming (so-so). On the other hand, Spice Alley was a revelation—it tasted just like mom’s cooking, which was absolutely yummy.
Spice Alley Rating : 4/5
JIBRIL rating : 3/5
In March 2024, during the month of Ramadan, we mostly spent our days at home. We enjoyed the peaceful rhythm of the month, only stepping out occasionally to buy food.
After Eidulfitri, I visited three different places to make up for the missed dining experiences. First up was Giggle & Geeks, where the semi-buffet for Eid was quite disappointing—nothing special about the flavors. Next, I tried 10gram, which was just so-so; the chicken wasn't the freshest and didn't quite hit the mark. I waited soooo long to finally tried Madam Croffle, and it completely redeemed the month. The croffles there were hands down the best I've ever tasted, the creme brulee croffle!
Madam Croffle Rating : 4/5
In May 2024, while I was out of town, I had the chance to try several new places, but the standout was Belibis Cafe in Pekan Pahang. The highlight of this visit was the unique dining experience inside a train coach. It added an extra layer of charm and novelty to the meal, and the food was absolutely delicious.
Belibis Cafe Rating (Pekan, Pahang) : 5/5
Around the same time in May, I was treated to a visit to an Asam Pedas Sejati in Ampang. The asam pedas itself was fantastic—full of bold, tangy flavors that hit the spot. However, the fish in the dish wasn’t as fresh as I would have hoped, which slightly affected the overall experience. Despite this, the rich, spicy gravy made it a memorable meal.
Asam Pedas Sejati (Ampang) Rating : 3/5 (freshness matter!)
That is all I can think about (from this year's visit), until next post!
