Surviving Rotavirus : My Tips
3:19 PM
As previous post(s) mentioned, Seff was hospitalized and discharged with Rotavirus he potentially got from his room mate of a week earlier in the Hospital *sigh*
I got a lot of help, and tips from dear friends regarding the care and here are my tips for Rotavirus care :
1. GO TO/BE AT THE HOSPITAL
Our suite
By the time he is severely dehydrated, he went again to ER Pantai Hospital Ipoh, this time with so much difficulties. The Doctor at the ER cannot make an IV line on Seff, making the ER team to call in their paed Dr Lee (Thank you, Doctor!) and luckily Dr Lee successfully find one.
I believe, Rotavirus symptoms has killed many children, so be sure to stay at the Hospital. When Seff experiencing vomit and all, he cannot take anything, so an IV drip is his only chance in survival.
2. BUY REUSABLE MATTRESS PROTECTOR
This was the tips coming from my dear friend Edd (yes, my best friend is a male hehe). Although you can always ask for more liner from the Hospital, know that they were charged. If you are a paying customer, or you probably would like to save on your insurances's limit/ceiling, you'd probably want to consider this tips.
Note : We are using my Husband's company insurance/benefit

We got two (2) of this sheets (Brand : Pureen), very easily available. Two (2) sheets needed so that when Seff poo-ed all over the first sheet, we can always roll up and put another one on the bed (and straightaway wash the first sheet)
Our choice : Pureen Baby Cot Sheet from HERE

3. FOOD FOR BABY WITH UPSET STOMACH
When at the Hospital, Seff, who never had a problem with food, has mixed appetite towards food. Although with IV drip on, Paed always encourage Seff to eat, and we tried quite a lot of options. The best food he could take :
1. Banana and watermelon
2. Rice porridge
3. Nasi lemak
But I read about BRAT (Banana, Rice, Applesauce, Toast) for upset stomach. Although probably unsuitable for sick baby, know that in our case, we always fed Seff with ORS (Oral Rehydration Salt). Because from the BRAT itself, although easy on the tummy, it was an unbalanced meal. But we had the IV drip & ORS, so yeah..
When discharged, I was worried to straightaway feed Seff anything he usually take, so I started again with chicken porridge. Seff was discharged on Monday, and he had porridge all day on Monday. On Tuesday, he started to eat like a normal toddler HEHEHE (rice, fried chicken, fruits, french toast and everything! Thank God)
4. LACTOSE-FREE FORMULA
When Seff was hospitalized, they ask about his milk (we mentioned his allergy towards cow's milk in the ER), and no further question asked about changing his formula milk. I read a lot about lactose free formula milk for baby with Rotavirus, but this one may refer to your doctor. Seff vomit his feeding (fresh milk) on Monday and stopped vomiting on Tuesday (unless being overfed, then he'll puke). I guess lactose-free formula (we use Isomil all this while) helps towards his upset stomach
It could be one of the factor, who knew
5. DIAPER RASH CREAM : OUR CHOICE
My personal favourite!
Seff's management involved very little medicines, I believe (read about other mom's experiences involving PCM, probiotic and many more? woah). Seff only has 2 or 3 bottles of IV drip, a lot of ORS, and some SMECTA, and diaper cream (hospital gave us QV baby)
But I have my personal favourite which is.. Mustela Vitamin Barrier Cream! Blogged about it somewhere in the past, this cream is soooooo gooooood, when Paed checked Seff's bottom, it isn't as bad kot, so the Paed look at our VBC. Hehe. Anything Seff has (rashes) gone overnight with this awesome cream. I have to say I love love love Mustela products!
Rotavirus caused Seff to have very frequent amount of poo (20 times in a day, or more, I believe) causing his bum to have rashes/redness). The day after discharged, it looks like as if he hasn't had diarrhoea! Flawless bottom overnight haha

I think that is all I can think of for now, until next post!
